If you don’t have your own transport, there are daily bus services which give connections to the whole island. The ring road around the island is approximately 100 km’s long and can be driven in about 1.5 hours. Why run though? Enjoy a leisurely tour around the island, taking in some of the more remote beaches and of course don’t forget to visit a couple of the traditional mountain villages.
Thassos is suitable holiday makers and travellers with many different tastes. If you like hiking, Thassos has many different trails that go up into the mountains. The highest mountain on Thassos, Ipsarion is over 1200 m’s high and if you get to the summit you will be rewarded with the most amazing views, on a clear day you can see Samothraki, Limnos and all the way to the Turkish coast. The island is also blessed by the number of beautiful beaches it has, to name a few - Skala Potamia, Golden Beach, Paradise Beach, Aliki, Psili Ammos, Pefkari and Tripiti Beach.
In the town of Limenas (Thassos Town), there are many archaeological sites such as the Acropolis of Thassos and the ancient amphitheatre which is still used and helps to host the Thassos Summer Festival with music, art and dramatic events.
Close to the beautiful beach and archaeological site of Aliki, is the largest monastery on the island which is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It sits on the edge of a vertical cliff and has an amazing view over the Aegean all the way to Mount Athos on the Halkidiki peninsular.
Every Monday morning Prinos hosts a large open air market/bazaar where you can find anything from food, fruit and vegetables to clothing and fashion goods with lots of bargains!
There are several boat trips available from various ports around Thassos, these are worth it as you get to see another side of the island and if you are lucky will stop off at some places which can only be reached by boat.
If you have the time, you will find other fantastic places close to Thassos, for example Kavala, also known as the Emerald City, Xanthi which has a cosmopolitan mix of east and west, Philippi where you can walk in the steps of Alexander the Greats father, there are hot springs and wetlands teeming with birdlife and so much more…..
