There are daily bus services, one of which follows the coastal road around Thassos. It's about 100 km in length and takes approximately 1½ hours to drive completely around the island. Thassos is suitable for those travelers with many different tastes. If you like hiking, Thassos has many different trails that go up into the mountains. One such mountain is called Ypsarion. It is about 1200 meters in height and hiking it will surely provide you with a great result. On a clear day the view from the peak is amazing. You can see many of the islands south of Thassos. The island also has many beaches such as Skala Potamia, Golden Beach, Paradise Beach, Aliki, and Tripiti Beach. These are just a few of the many beaches that Thassos has to offer. In the town of Limenas (Thassos Town), there are many archaeological sites such as the Acropolis of Thassos and the ancient amphitheater which hosts a cultural festival every summer. In the village of Potamia, you can visit the museum of Polygnotos Vagi. He was a famous sculptor from Thassos. Near the beach and archaeological site of Alyki, there is a large monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It sits on the edge of a large cliff and has an amazing view of the sea. On Monday mornings, Prinos has a large bazaar where you can find many different items from food to clothing at low prices. Thassos also has boat trips around the island which will give you the chance to view the island from the sea. These trips will give you the chance to visit areas of the island that are inaccessible. While here, you can also visit regions beyond the island such as Kavala (also known as the Emerald City), Xanthi (exotic aroma of the East), Philippi (where you will find impressive ruins of a city built by the father of Alexander the Great), the hot springs, and many other areas of archaeological interest. |
